Harriet Tubman Public School
This new 2-storey elementary school replaced an existing aging facility on the same site, accommodating the increased enrolment of two other decommissioned schools. Situated in an established residential neighbourhood and a public park, the school property was annexed to the public park via the closure of a city street. The enlarged school site offers enhanced play yard functions by day while remaining publicly accessible by night. The new building reflects the heritage style of its context and of the existing building which it replaces. The new school is sited alongside a 100+ year purple beech tree which features prominently in the front yard. This 52,000 sq. ft. school features a courtyard in alongside the Main Entry which prominently features a bronze statue of the historically significant Harriet Tubman. Within the school, major program areas include: 5 Kindergartens, 26 Classrooms, LRT Room, Learning Commons, a divisible Double Gymnasium with sprung wood floor and Stage, an Administrative Wing and various Staff Areas.
